Frequently Asked Questions about Highland Products:

What are single-wall and double-wall construction?

Single-wall construction uses a single sheet thickness of either mild-carbon or stainless steel meeting ASTM specifications. Superior “ribbed” strength is achieved with minimum 1/2” lap welded joints.

Double-wall construction uses two dependable walls of steel, the outer wrapped tightly around the inner creating an interstice. The interstice can be monitored to detect a leak in either tank wall using a Highland Tank monitoring system or manual probe. The primary tank can be internally seal-welded, lined, or constructed with stainless steel.

What are the benefits to underground tank installations?

Fire safety, space limitations, theft/vandalism concerns.

What are the benefits to aboveground tank installations?

Visual inspection of the tank, potential for relocation of the tank.

What are the different types of underground tank protection systems?

ACT 100-U® 100% solids polyurethane coating applied at a 70-mil minimum.

STI-P3® Three-part cathodically protected tank utilizing nylon bushings, dielectric coating and anodes.

TITAN TANK Double-wall tank with the primary tank being steel and the outer tank constructed of high-density polyethylene.

What does fire-rated mean?

The true fire rated tank designation is “fire-protected”. Fire-protected means a tank is labeled with Underwriters Laboratories 2085 standard and has passed UL’s two hour fire test, hose stream test, impact test, ballistics test and air tests. Other designations exist, however, only fire-protected tanks can carry UL’s 2085 label.

Who needs an oil/water separator?

Any facility that has a potential oil bearing waste water discharge.

What is npdes?

The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System has a March 10, 2003 compliance date for small industrial sites and sewer systems of 50,000 gallons or more.

What does an oil/water separator do?

Highland’s oil water separators are used specifically for the removal of free floating oil, grease, and settable oily coated solids from oil/water discharges associated with many types of industrial facilities.

Who needs a grease interceptor?

Any facility that is discharging fats, oils and greases into either a storm sewer system or the environment.

What are the differences between automatic and passive units?

Automatic Grease Interceptors: Mechanized grease interceptors for discharges of fats, oils and grease generated predominately from washing and cleaning operations in restaurants and food preparation facilities--pot washing, pre-rinse stations, floor drains, trenches and ventilation hoods.

Passive Grease Interceptors: Gravity-based grease interceptors for large quantities of fats, oils and grease (which might interfere with proper municipal wastewater treatment) generated and discharged by large commercial/institutional kitchens and food service facilities.

Are steel tanks still permitted to buried underground?

Yes, according to recent studies approximately 70% of the underground tank market is steel.

Who approves? permits tank installations?

The authority having jurisdiction. In many cases it is the local fire marshal.

What can be stored in a steel tank?

Virtually any liquid can be stored in a properly engineered steel tank. Petroleum products are typically stored/transported through steel. From the drilling wells to the pipelines to the transport trucks to the end products themselves (i.e. engines) steel is the product of choice.

Is a steel tank stronger than a fiberglass tank?

The inherent strength of steel is far superior to fiberglass. Underground fiberglass tanks typically rely on the backfill around them for structural support.
